Designer Babies-- Dazzling or Dystopian?

Welcome to my blog! For this project, I am going to be digging into the topic of designer babies. I am mostly concerned with the ethics of this, as well as what it is, how it is done, and what it can mean for our future.

Questions I have concerning this technology are: Is it ethical? How far should we go? Will this lead to a new wave of eugenics and discrimination? How exactly does it work? Can messing with DNA cause new defects to emerge? And many more that I hope to address throughout this project.

So what is a designer baby?

A designer baby is a baby whose genes have been altered, or chosen over others to create a 'designer' human. This can be used to ensure that the baby is born without a particular defect, or to ensure a certain trait, such as eye color.

Why is this important?

The questions of the ethics of this is extremely important, as well as how far it should go. It is important because this technology could completely change the course of the human race. It could be used to eradicate cancer, or to create a new human elite based on the preferred genetics. This could be really good, or really bad, depending on how it is used. I feel that it is important to be educated on this process that way it can be used for good, and limited so that it cannot be used to discriminate.

What will this blog discuss?

Since this topic is limitless, and go in many directions, I am going to use the next four blog posts to feature specific topics and aspects of genetic engineering. In the next few blog posts, you can expect to learn about how science fiction has taken on the subject of Genetic engineering, and how these dystopian worlds can cause fear; the genetic engineering technology of Crispr- 9 and how it works; IVF (In vitro fertilization) technology that we possess now, as well as why and how it is related to this debate; and finally, my thoughts and conclusions on what I have learned throughout this research.

I look forward to learning about this technology and sharing it with all of you!

Happy blogging! --Dani

  1. 1. What did you find interesting about the post? I found the topic of designer babies super interesting. I had never heard anything about this before. I am really glad you chose this topic because what if this technology is plummeting the natural order of birth. I am very interested to hear about more views and stories in this topic.
    2. What would you add to this post? or What questions does the post generate for you about the topic? The questions I would have on this topic would be when did this first start? Who thought of this technology? Has anybody tried it and how were the outcomes?
    3. What do you agree with or disagree with and why? I agree that this technology is quite interesting yet maybe dangerous because technology was never supposed to be apart of a newborn child. I am very curious for more posts on this topic because it is very intriguing. I agree with your view on how designer babies technology might be more hindering than helpful.

    2. What would you add to this post? Or what questions does the post generate for you about the topic? I honestly thing your first entry is great but I do have lots of questions about your topic. 3. What I found interesting about this post is all the science behind your research. This topic is interesting all in it's self, I am very excited to read more on your blog. The question I have on this topic is do you think this is ethical? If you where to go along with this and have a kid and you could change its looks would you do it? Or do you know if you would yet? For me I definitely disagree with changing babies. 1. This is my opinion so please don't take offense but I feel that it is against God's plan for human life and it takes away from his creation,2. I feel changing your baby takes away from the surprise of a new life, the surprise of features the baby will have. I cant wait to see what all kinds of research you will find on this topic.

  4. I am very excited to learn more. I definitely think that there is a place for picking a healthy baby, but not to "design" the child you want. There are somethings that just shouldn't be messed with. If you are trying to deters a deadly disease, then absolutely. If you want a blonde hair blue eye baby, you probably shouldn't be a parent. I can't wait to learn more through your blog.

  5. 1) What did I find interesting about the post?
I found your entire post very interesting, but mostly I found the part where you stated that designer babies could basically change the course of the human race. That statement in its self is pretty powerful to me. If this gets taken and turned into something bad, it could be tragic. I could defiantly see people using this as part of a discrimination tacit and then this designer baby thing becomes not only a means to create a perfect human according to their perceptive but then it becomes an ethical issue as well.
    2) What would you add to this post? or What question does the post generate for you about the topic?
I would add to the post how long designer babies have been in the making. Questions your post generate for me are; Are their already discrimination issues due to the designer baby? What, if any kinds of medical problems have any of these designer babies had? How much does this kind of thing cost?
    3) What do you agree with or disagree with and why?
I agree with you about how important the question of ethics is in regards to such a topic. Their is a very very fine line of discrimination that one could easily cross.
